Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a Quilt Gallery!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a Quilt Gallery!
Really, we do! There are historic wholecloth quilts on the walls, quilts in the display windows, more quilts in armoires, behind glass and on racks and shelves. A devoted shop cat is in residence, regular hours are being kept, quilt reference books are on the shelves and people are coming through those handsome double doors into our humble little shop! There might not be a permanent sign up (oh, but the laser printer did earn its keep in the meantime!), there might not be price tags or helpful signs where there ought, but with a setting like this: soaring 13+ foot walls, gorgeous expanses of honey-hued wood flooring, gallery lighting deserving of a museum, two handsome little display window alcoves, a grand double-doored entrance, a slice of view out to Ashland's golden hills. . . . . with distractions like these, no one's complaining about our very "soft" opening! It's just such a delight to see the quilts displayed this way, brought together in such a rare and lovely showcase! Wouldn't you agree? Come take a little tour with the photos below. Continue below the fold for a big pictorial tour through the rest of the gallery.....
A jumble of well-loved quilts spills from a trunk when you enter. The crib-sized tumbling block quilt hung above takes the cake for wear and vanished fabrics, but with piecing that miniscule, you can lose a few dozen diamonds here and there and go on charming your way everywhere you want to be!
Purposeful shop cat, making the rounds.
There's so much to look at, but the highlights of this shot are the half hidden mound of shop cat, thoughtfully examining various perches in turn, and the Mountain Stars Quilt Guild's Raffle Quilt: Bluebirds over Baltimore. This beautiful hand-appliqued, machine-quilted opportunity quilt is gracing our wall for the first couple weeks we are open. During that time, you can stop by the shop to buy tickets for your chance to win it (and support the guild members' charitable efforts) or contact your favorite local guild member. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The lucky winner will be drawn on Sunday, April 22nd during the guild's biannual show, Sew Crazy at the Medford Armory. Sources say a previous year's winner, a guild member's cautious elderly aunt, remained so skeptical that an unknown voice at the end of the line was really calling to congratulate her and send her something free, that after she had hung up on them repeatedly, the guild agreed to draw an alternate winner!
These racks on the back wall are my favorite addition to the shop. I get to display enough of each quilt that you get the idea, but there's still space to show a bunch of them together. I look forward to shuffling them around as some sell or are needed elsewhere. I think it will be appealing to see how each addition, subtraction and reshuffle changes the overall feel. A condensed mini-version of changing the show on the walls, perhaps.
